The Umbilical Cord Bank at Royan Institute has begun the manufacturing of «Plaquete lysis » products to be used in cord cell therapy.

According to Dr. MarziehEbrahimi, head of Royan’s Umbilical Cord Bank, these products are a rich source of growth factors which are needed for cell multiplication, and therefore will be used in different cell therapy and skin treatments especially plastic surgery.

Dr. Ebrahimi said these products will be extracted from the cord blood, reducing the chances of the immune system showing any sensitivity.

She also added that it is very important to cultivate these cells in the most efficient and safe possible way.Dr. Ebrahimi said in recent years, many scientists have been moving away from the use of animal serum in cell culture and «Plaquete lysis »products are proving to be a good substitute.

She said in the past, a 10-20 percent concentration of fetal calf serum (FCS) or fetal bovine serum (FBS) was often used to cultivate these cells. The method usually resulted in an inflammatory response and a rejection of the transplanted cells. This she added, is not to mention that cultivations with animal serum lead to a spread of bacterial and viral infections specially prions proteins commonly found in mad cow disease.
