The President of the World Food Prize Foundation, Dr. Kenneth Quinn, said this in an opening remark on the occasion of the celebrating ceremony of late Dr. Norman Borlaug’s 100th birthday during the First International and the 13th national Iranian Crop Science Congress. He continued: “I am here for several reasons: first, to thank Iranian researches for heir respect to Dr. Borlaug, the founder of the World Food Prize and the man with whom I worked for more than a decade; second, to pay tribute to Iranian great historical contributions to agriculture made in ancient times”. He acclaimed that there is an exhibit in the World Food Prize hall of laureates about that particular aspect of Iran’s history. The President’s third reason was somehow a “personal one” as he added: I am here to visit Iran with my wife and tell Iranians about the history of the state of Iowa”. He further explained that Dr. Borlaug was born in Iowa and he founded the world food prize there. The fourth reason was being present in the conference to discuss whether it was possible to feed the large population of the world which was considered as the greatest challenge of the human’s history. “Dr. Borlaug would appreciate me for my being in Iran today” Dr. Quinn continued. Dr. Quinn mentioned that his being here is a good opportunity to work together through the World Food Prize program to achieve greater food security. He also invited two students go to Des Moines with their teachers to take part in their global youth institute, created by Dr. Borlaug. He extended his invitation to a wheat scientist to attend the ceremony concluding the centennial tribute on the honor of Dr. Norman Borlaug to be held in Iowa.
