Iranian Bt. Cotton was revealed during the opening ceremony of the 9th national and 1st international Biotechnology Congress of Iran, by the Minister of Agriculture, Mahmoud Hojjati, Head of the congress, Dr. Mostafa Ghanei, in presence of the World Food Prize Laureate, Dr. Marc Van Montagu, and over 1000 authorities and participants in this congress.
Dr. Seyyed Elyas Mortazavi, the representative of Agricultural Biotechnology Research Institute of Iran (ABRII) said that Bt Cotton project was initiated in Iran since 1999.” Bt cotton yields up to 6 Ton per hectare, which is at least %30 more than non-GM varieties", he added.
This Bt Cotton cultivar is a semi drought tolerant and resistant to viral diseases.
Parallel to its being revealed, its release approval is going to be ready, too.
Revealing Bt Cotton is a huge transition going on immediately ever since President Ruhani has been resumed the presidential office.
There appear to be suppositions that Bt rice will be the next GM crop to be revealed in Iran soon.
